Creating immersive experiences at Cambridge Biomedical Campus
Industry Innovation
One of our core values at Prologis is to create spaces where communities and nature can flourish. For instance, at Cambridge Biomedical Campus we have a public art programme which uses art and sculpture installed around the site to provide an inspiring environment for those on site.
A bustling hub for life sciences, the Campus is a place where innovation meets high quality patient care. Providing tranquil outdoor spaces for reflection and relaxation is vital for the wellbeing of the hundreds of people who interact with the campus every day - including healthcare staff, hospital patients and the general public.
The latest art installation on Campus is the Senescent Generator - a landmark public artwork commissioned by Prologis in collaboration with the Campus community and brought to life by British artist Shezad Dawood. The art piece uniquely blends sculpture and sound, offering a calming sensory experience to inspire and relax those who visit.
Designed as a “living artwork”, the sculpture takes the form of a yew tree, a species known for its medicinal properties, and is made from materials that work with nature, encouraging the growth of moss and other plant life. Over time, the sculpture will develop a striking patina that blends naturally with the surrounding environment, symbolic of the Campus’ theme of connection, collaboration and continuous growth.
Accompanying the sculpture, and offering a truly immersive experience, is an experimental music composition for visitors to listen to. Featuring frequency recordings of local yew trees, the soundtrack encourages visitors feel at one with the garden space around them.
Emily Bliss, from our Capital Deployment team, said: “The Senescent Generator is a fantastic addition to our art programme at Cambridge Biomedical Campus. What makes the piece so special is how immersive it is for visitors, combining sculpture with seating and sound to provide a much-welcomed quiet space where anyone can take time for reflection. It’s a wonderful example of how creativity and innovation can come together to make inspiring environments for those who work, study and visit.”
The installation forms part of Prologis’ ongoing commitment to investing in high-quality public spaces across the Campus, enhancing community wellbeing for everyone.
