Sainsbury's at ProLogis Park Pineham

The Requirement

Sainsbury's needed a new East Midlands distribution centre that would serve 50 stores and carry 1.5 million cases per week.
The new facility had to meet Sainsbury’s strict environmental criteria.

The Solution

ProLogis was able to offer an ideal location at Pineham, next to Junction 15a of the M1.
Working closely with Sainsbury's, ProLogis delivered a 618,000 sq ft Carbon Neutral, highly cost-efficient facility that achieved BREEAM 'Excellent' accreditation with a score of 71.84%. There is an on-site resource recycling unit and the rainwater harvesting system saves 16 million litres of water a year.
All ProLogis buildings are designed to minimise operational carbon emissions and to achieve this, ProLogis adopts a logical approach to carbon reduction. The Sainsbury's building was designed to function passively and then the most efficient plant available was specified for essential energy usage.
To meet Sainsbury's operational needs, ProLogis installed low or zero carbon systems, including a combined heat and power (CHP) plant that provides electricity and heat for the facility. The heat is produced during the electricity generation process and is used to drive an absorption refrigeration system as well as to heat harvested rainwater for use in an industrial tray wash in the on-site resource recycling unit.
The embodied carbon emissions of the development totalled 22,000 tonnes. These were offset by 110% through a fully audited carbon offsetting scheme provided by sustainability consultants, dcarbon8.
